Gastrointestinal mucins produced by goblet cells comprise the main structural components of the mucus layer. Mucins play a critical role in the maintenance of mucosal homeostasis and are responsible for the differential effector and regulatory responses against a plethora of microorganisms, including commensals and pathogens.

The aim of this review is to familiarise the reader with the role of mucins in both lung health and disease, with particular focus on function in immunity, infection and inflammation. The mucin expands from the vesicle into this space at a very rapid rate. It is hypothesized that this rapid expansion is mediated by the exchange of sodium (and other monovalent cations) from the extracellular space with divalent calcium ions that are present in the vesicle in high concentration prior to exocytosis. All mucins are highly O-glycosylated by variable glycans depending on species, histoblood group and organ.

Aberrations in O-glycosylation are responsible for certain human diseases and are associated with disease risk factors. Recent studies have demonstrated essential roles for mucin-type O-glycosylation in protein secretion, stability, processing, and function. 1997-11-01 2006-06-01 A practical guide to developing virtual and augmented reality exercises for teaching structural biology 2020-11-24 The alpha subunit has cell adhesive properties.

Mucin is a mucoprotein found in mucous. It coats the epithelial surface. Gastric mucin protects the stomach from an attack of acids. it is mainly produced by goblet cells, apical cells of the conjunctiva and cornea and the lacrimal gland. It is present in saliva and bile and in salivary glands, in the skin, connective, tissues, tendon, and 2020-11-24 · The baseline associations in control group between participant’s age and mucin-related gene expression, including SPDEF, MUC5AC, and MUC16 mRNA levels, were assessed by partial correlation coefficient. The expression levels of mucin-related genes between men and women in the control group were compared using the Mann-Whitney U-test.

The main group consisted of healthy adults over 75 years (n=18) Saliva also contains immunoglobulins, proteins, mucin, enzymes and techniques, with scientists from oral biology community to develop portable POC. (point-of-care)
