The aim of the Adages was to recapture, in this handy portmanteau Proverbs, chiefly taken from the Adagia of Erasmus, with explanations; and further illustrated by corresponding examples from the Spanish, Italian, French & English languages by Bland, R. (Robert), 1730-1816 ; Erasmus, Desiderius, d. 1536 This modest work became the basis for one of Erasmus’ best known and longest works, when it was expanded in 1508 into the far more substantial Adagiorum chiliades. The essay that begins this introductory volume to the Adages explores the development of the Collectanea and its transformation into the Adagiorum chiliades. In ISo8 Erasmus completely reworked the Adagia for the Aldine press, increasing the number of adages from 838 to 3260 and greatly ex-panding the commentary. The first item in this enlarged folio volume is Amicorum communia omnia, a Pythagorean precept taken from the same passage in Jerome already cited. The second item is Amicitiae ae-qualitas.
